T-33 pictures wanted...

Sun Nov 21, 2010 8:51 pm

I am trying to find pictures of T-33A-1-LO s/n: 49-954R which crashed 31 Aug 1955 southwest of Atlanta. At the time of the crash, it was painted with bright "day-glo" according to the crash report. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Jim

I guess I should generalize my request a bit. Can anyone share a pic of ANY T-33 with the day-glo paint scheme in order to get a better idea of what the crash aircraft might have looked like? I am trying to get a memorial made for the pilot so every bit of info I can present may help.

Something like this one, perhaps?

Bob,
Thanks. I have seen paint schemes similar to the one in your picture and I think that is probably what the crash aircraft looked like, but the crash report mentioned the "odd" paint scheme several times for a variety of reasons so I wonder if it was something different. The aircraft was assigned to pilot refresher training at Dobbins AFB if that helps narrow things down any.

Thanks again for the help.

Best,
Jim

Thanks Gents--great pics. At this point, I am guessing the paint scheme shown in the pics was not a common scheme and maybe that is why the USAF crash report made mention of it as much as they did. The crash in question led to a USAF policy change regarding pilot innoculations and their return to flight. Thanks for the assist--much appreciated.

Thanks for those shots of the beautiful "Texas Air Guard" T-33 with the Arctic Red markings. That was my favorite T-33 of the several at Oshkosh last summer. I hope to see it again at a future air show.

However I think the beautiful red markings on this T-33 may not be the "day-glo" markings that Jim/10tweaker may be looking for. I am wondering if the day-glo may be the international orange day-glo type marking that were once seen on a lot of T-33's and other aircraft as opposed to the "arctic/"insignia" red type markings seen on a lot of aircraft also.

Not intending to hijack the thread, but given so many people here with T-33 knowledge.....

I went to my hangar today to get the Christmas decorations, and saw something neat on the ramp in front of my hangar. A black T-33! Sadly, I didn't have my camera. I suppose it's getting an annual done at the A&P/IA's hangar behind mine since it had a bunch of panels and such removed. Some marking were sanded off as well, so I couldn't find an N-number. It looked like the center, and possibly the outer ring of the roundel had been removed, leaving only a white circle. Instead of "No Step", there was a white shoe print with a white "X" superimposed over it.

Any ideas on where it might have come from? I'll try to find out more when I can talk to my airport buddy who usually knows everything that goes on in San Marcos.

The black bird was replaced on the ramp by a gray one. I saw someone working under it, so I stopped to talk. The black one and gray one were two of the last 50 to be released by Canada. They are putting them back together now, and there is possibly going to be a third one arriving as well. Real nice guys who have these two! Sorry, no photos yet.

If you tell us what the report said, that might get you more data in return. As it is, this thread's like playing poker. ;)

Direct quotes from the report would be good, and avoid the levels of interpretation we are filtering through here.

Good luck, it seems a worthwhile task!
