Just received a slide of a P-51D with no registration. It is metal with the US insignia on the fuselage and under the right wing. The wing tip and spinner are yellow. The slide was taken at Mojave on 4-5-78. Any Ideas?
Thanks, Karl

Possibly POF Spam Can.
There was a movie which ran out of money after production started during that time fram.
POF supplied their P-51D in movie paint. They also used their B-25.
IIRC they may have been some other P-51 used as well.
Rich
Edit- Some of The filming that occurred was based out of Mojave IIRC.

Jay Cullum's from his pre-skyraider days.

Could possibly be Dick Vartanian's N74978 which also spent time at Mojave during that timeframe, and wore those colors. Any chance you could post the photo?

I think most likely Al Letcher's 44-72777 "Singapore Sally" -- later to become "Sparky". It was based at Mojave during that time.

I can't help with the ID but I remember reading in Air Classics about the movie. Someone had access to a lot of color film footage of 20th AF P-51s at Okinawa or Iwo Jima and the idea was to use as much of the war time air to air footage as possible while having a few Mustangs repainted in matching camouflage to help round out the footage. I believe the storyline was from Europe or the Med. theaters but since the footage was Pacific they had to go with those color schemes. This was about the time that a lot of wartime color footage was used in Midway. Always wondered what happened. Seems like there are a lot more film projects that never get finished than those that do.
