Aww, that's a shame; I had a spare ticket for the composite 787's first revenue flight...I'll just have to give it to somebody else instead :P

That interior shot of the gutted waist (and the outside shot of the port side shattered ball) is "Little Miss Mischief", an that is why she needed and got a new tail. She flew some more combat missions until her luck really ran out. If I read correctly, one waist gunner and the ball turret gunner were slightly injured, with the ball gunner also getting some frostbite on the way home. Says a lot for luck and the strength of the airframe.

Is the 724 on the bulkhead part of the Vega c/n (which I think would be 7245)?

Yes, that's the contract number.
There's an example of using a similar partial view to identify another B-17 in the Chuckie Restoration thread.
