Main Features are:

ALBATROS!

The Vintage Aviator’s Albatros D.Va took to the air on 28 October from Hood Aerodrome, Masterton, NZ. In this article Gene de Marco describes the fascinating journey that has culminated in this wonderfully accurate reproduction joining this ever evolving world class collection of Great War aircraft. Gene also relates as to how the fighter flies. With its powerful engine, lightly built airframe and minimal bracing pushing the limits of technology at the time –this makes a very interesting read to say the least! The story is complemented by some superb air to air photography by Gavin Conroy.

SWALLOW INTO THE STORM

In our last issue we took a short look at the development and deployment of the Messerschmitt Me 262, and also the rush to secure examples of this aircraft for evaluation by the Allies. The few survivors of this particular ‘round-up’ feature in a detailed look at the remaining examples of this revolutionary fighter, which includes both period and current photos.

CATALINAS DOWNUNDER

It has been over a decade since we looked at the subject of surviving Catalina flying boats and amphibians in Australia and New Zealand. To say that the type has enjoyed a healthy growth in popularity during this time would be an understatement, as the number of PBYs preserved down under has doubled, whilst the number of flying examples has quadrupled! We take a look at the histories and current status of all of these lovely old ladies.

MINOR MIRACLE!

Craig Justo describes the return to flight of Moth Minor VH-CZB, an aircraft he first saw some twenty years ago when it was housed at the Oakley Historical Museum. Sold to Mark Carr in 2003 the de Havilland went straight into restoration and this is described in detail, culminating in the machine taking to the air again some 61 years after its last flight. Finished in its RAAF Trainer colours, the Moth Minor can now be counted amongst the finest examples of the type in the world.

Steve- there is some delay before we get US subs sent on down here via the California post box, however I will drop both 72-73 in the post today (Monday) so you can have something to read whilst you digest that Xmas dinner

Folks

A question re Distribution of the mag in the US. Did anyone see the last issue ( No.72 -Skyraider Cover) on the shelves anywhere? I believe Barnes & Noble carry it.
We have had a change at this end with the forwarding of the magazine to the US, which is causing a few teething troubles :x

TIA
Dave

DaveM2 - I had a tough time with California not processing my checks for several months after I would send them in, so I started buying each issue at Barnes and Noble. But the B&N where I live quit carrying it quite a while back, and I haven't been able to get it since Issue 63. I miss it terribly, and have thought about trying California again, but buying a money order and sending that instead of a check. I think it is the very best Warbird publication I've ever seen. Do you folks prefer a money order vs a check? Thanks.

There are a few Barnes & Noble stores I stop into and it's usually hit or miss whether I see copies there. If they only get a couple copies they may be sold out by the time I end up browsing there.

Thanks for the feedback gentlemen, most appreciated. The distribution in the US is and always has been quite a problem, even Tim has mentioned problems with WD and it is based there!

Steve

Your payment arrived in amongst the other US orders in a large envelope today, so all good, although I will take a closer look and see if it is 'International' tomorrow....

George - Cheque or Credit Card is best for us, but money orders are okay if they are not 'Valid in the US only' (i.e they must be International). As I mentioned there is quite a delay before they get sent on by the California connection-that is because the PO Box is cleared on a casual basis and the subs are held until enough arrive to make it worthwhile to package them all up in one large envelope to send on to NZ. Not the best system I am afraid, but there you have it.
You would actually have your cheque cleared far sooner by sending it direct to CW office here in NZ (click on the banner at the top of this page for details). Some get turned off by having to pay the extra postage to get the mail here, which is the reason for having the California PO Box.

BTW - if anyone hasn't seen the mag and would like to get a free sample, the first 10 to shout out on here will get one in the post. Can't do more than that many however- or there won't be enough petty cash to buy the kids a present this year
No 'sneaky' shouts - if you have a copy-even one -you don't qualify ( I know who you are  )
