A long time ago when I was a kid I saw a old movie. It was about a guy training on PBY's. I think it was pre war. Not sure. Any idea what movie it was? I think it had some good shots of old PBY's.

Thanks,
Nathan(the curious)

Maybe "High Barbaree" with Van Johnson? I think the PBY shots were war time though. In the film the aircraft has landed in the ocean and cannot take off again. Lots of great interior shots showing all the equipment etc.

Another one with good PBY footage, although it's very brief is "Kiss them For Me" starring Cary Grant as Cmdr Crewson. I believe it was shot in the late 1950's.

Did anyone ever see a movie filmed in like the 70's with some guys rebuilding a PBY to fly and it blows up at the end

Wasn't there a PBY in The night they stole Miss Beautiful contender for (that hotly contested title) 'worst movie with an aeroplane in it'?

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076458/

The movie was called Steelyard Blues, starring Nathan's avatar (and unfortunately Hanoi Jane as well): http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0070731/ I remember watching it on TV as a teenager. About the only thing I remember was a scene at a demolition derby. Several characters are in the stands, and one (D. Sutherland I think) is bragging that while driving in demo derbies he wrecked on of every model built between something like 1950 and 1960, except a '50 Studebaker. When the cars pull into the arena, one is (you guessed it) at '50 Studebaker. The guy yells and runs off..then minutes later comes flying into the arena in a hijacked ambulance, and T-bones the Studebaker to make his record complete.

Unfortunately, I saw that one too.......once.

That was Steelyard Blues from 1973:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0070731/

It was a ratty -5A with that odd angular rudder some of the civil ones had, plus another one in NMF in a scene where the characters "borrow" some parts off it. I don't have the DVD but I taped it off TV; let me see if I can get some usable screencaps.

Is it just me, or do those wing sections on the upper left look like they're from a B-26 Marauder!?

I don't think it was any of those movies. It was black and white and I would say the date was 1940 or 41 around there. I can remember in the movie the guy training on a PBY and other float panes. I remember a scene in the cockipit where the guy pulls in and out the yoke constantly during the take off role in the PBY. I believe there was scenes of N3N's, SOC's, and maybe a Kingfisher in the movie. :?: :?:
