Thank you Jack!!!!

I thought it might have a connection to Tarsier monkey - VF-33 had one on there emblem and were formed/reformed/operated on the same airfields in 1943 - but this definitely looks like a cat!

Now I can correct the artwork. It did confuse me why one ear was bigger than the other - can now see it is a hat rim!

Only need to find out who flew White 2?

Do you anyone else have a contact at National Archives where VF-38 records are kept.

Thanks again Jack - great help.

regards

Mark

Re-drawn (my drawings not improving!) and coloured the emblem as per the visible remaining paint - only the gun is the unclear part - little remains.

Interesting - no official record of this emblem - thought to be unofficial and from the period they were land based - Sept 1943. It went to a fighting Cockerel with sharp claws later 1943-45.

I'm guessing that Felix would be black and white??

Jack

It seemed to be blue though unclear if this is blue painted over the emblem (when it was removed later - post V-38).

Looking at the scan you provided, the cat is the same as the ring (black ) and is different to the background blue of the Hellcat so on the scan one it does look black.

Having a detailed look at the photo from 25910 it does seem to be blue? Will send you a high resolution photo of the area. Just under the mouth is the red/white blue survives well and..... well be interesting to see what you think.

regards

Mark

Mark, I see a dark (probably black) outline to the cat, same color as the ring, and some detail on his chest in the same shade so the cats body color IMO is not black but some other dark color outlined in black.
