It was always my concern that the operational position of the ID-2/APS-2 repeater, when it was not in use, would amount to a head knocker for a mobile Privateer co-pilot . -Adrian

Check out the ATC dynamotor (item 9) in the picture two shots above. I have never seen such a small ART-13 dynamotor, have you?

I sure would love to see a decked out PB4Y-2 flying. They sure were packed full of awesome gear.

Nick Veronico is doing the end all book on the PB4Y-2 which will be great. It will cover every airframe ever produced.

Hello, Taigh - I suspect the power unit was lost when the photo was cropped. It’s true, BuAero did things a little differently than Sig Corps. They would breakdown dynamotor nomenclature into individual dynamotor/power unit components (so much for joint nomenclature), but I have never heard of separate mounting locations. There was an entire host of dynamotor units authorized for use with ART-13. As far as I know, all were about the same size with similar mounting provisions.

Incidentally, Mike’s photos likely shows an early Privateer, as the Navy later attempted to standardize on instrument panel layouts (and it almost worked). The one shown looks like it predates this standardization effort. -Adrian
