Warbird Information Exchange

Was wondering if anyone knew any info on the unmarked military looking airfield that's located just SE of Jerry Yagen's facility. Was this a possible location that Mr. Yagen was looking into for his museum location?

That is an old WWII Naval field to the South of the FF Airport. It's unused and pretty short runways.

To the West is NAS Fentress, a big long runway and an Auxiliary landing field for the Navy. Generally, F-18's go there to practice landings so they don't tie up Oceana.
When I went to the Fighter Factory in August, we passed right by it and the F-18's were out in force practicing. I wish I could've watched for a bit, but we wanted to get to the museum.
It would be a great airfield for a museum if the Navy gets it's way and builds an new OLF in N.C., There are older WWII runways in the NW corner that are un-used and would make great ramp space. My guess is that the Fighter Factory is going to stay put for a long time though!

Thanks for that Jerry, upon a second glace I noticed that the runways are pretty short! Maybe nice for the fighters but not for the heavy iron.

I also agree, the location they have is awesome! Cant wait to see what they do to it in a few years.

I think you may mean Pungo Field- Tommy Blackburn mentions it in his book about VF-17 "The Jolly Rogers" I think it would make a mean civvy field, and wondered why Jerry didn't buy it! Great place for a WWII A/C museum...

The old Pungo field is NE of Jerry's site in the NE corner of Indian River Rod and Princess Ann Rd.

And just to clarify a little about the Fighter Factory. The Fighter Factory is still based at Suffolk Exec. Airport until a new MX hangar is built at the field at Pungo where the Military Aviation Museum is located and the flying ac live. They are basically two separate entities that operate independently of each other, but both owned by Jerry.
Also in the plans besides a new MX hangar for the FF at Pungo is a WW2 RAF control tower built at the intersection of the cross runway, a German WW1 hangar and a couple of other buildings.

The runways at Creeds are 2500 feet long and 150 feet wide.

The Virginia Department of Public Safety is in the process of converting the field into a Law Enforcement Training Center, scheduled to open sometime late this year.

There appear to be a lot of antenna arrays at Pungo.
