That really is one awsome shot of one of the coolest looking airplanes ever built! That airplane looks like it's going mach 1+ sitting in the chocks.

When I worked @ ROCKWELL INT. on the first B-1A, one of my co-workers had just left the Navy and was a plane captain in heavy 12 so he was really stoked on the bird-

Had a 1:72 Revell kit of that back in the mid 70's! I used to race it around the house faster than the real one could fly!!!! until I ran into a wall with it.
Still picking plastic out of that hand!

another fun thing was maneuvering on deck....the nose gear was aft of the pilot station and sometimes you had to swing around with nothing but water under you. it was also fun to take off in zone 3 just to get off the deck.

When did you take that photo of the Viggie at NATTC Millington? I was stationed there twice, once as a student (75-76) and another as an instructor (84-89). The RA-5C was there during my second tour. There was also an F11F Tiger on the NAS side of the base. During the seventies I seem to remember there were a few more birds down at the intersection between the golf course and the hospital.

I was there in 94 (Jan to Sept for AT school). I have shots of the F11F and a AV-8C (I think). There were some F-4s and other aircraft in the firefighting section by I never got any pictures of those. There were also several A-7s that were used for training near the gate closest to the Commissary, but again I never took pictures.

There were always a lot of training airframes around. During the 80's it was mainly A-4's with some F-4's and A-7's.
I was an AQ until they made us convert over to AT's. I spent most of my instuctor tour teaching airborne radar in AFTA-A1 with some time in AV-A in the radar lab.

The RA-5 was replaced by the F-14 for aerial recon in 1980. So it served for about 15 years.

Performance was Mach 2.0 at altitude

Each Engine produced approx 11,000 LBf and 17,000 LBf w/ afterburner.

Rate of climb is 8000 FPM

Weight (empty) is 32,000 Lb

Weight loaded is 47,000 LB

Here are the F-15's performance figures:

Mach 2.5+ at altitude

Each engine produces 17,000 LBf and 29,000 LBf w/ afterburner.

Rate of climb is 50,000 FPM

Weight (empty) is 28,000 Lb

Weight loaded is 44,500 LB

Curious to see what would happen if the RA5 had F-110 engines, and then compared to the F-15?

On the flip side, if somebody flew an F-15 w/o afterburner performance should compare to the RA-5 based on performance #'s.

Curious to see what Mr. Haskin knows?
