Oshkosh 2009 Warbird "gigapan" picture

Mon Aug 03, 2009 6:23 am

I had a blast working my tail off on the OSH Warbird jet ramp again this year. It was an excellent turn out of jets, T-28s, and several other beautiful birds on the hard surface. Thanks to ALL OF YOU who brought your aircraft to the show!

A flying buddy of mine showed up with his home made camera mount and tripod. I took him out on the ramp right after the area sterilized and he was kind enough to take a panoramic picture. His camera rig is an interesting device that uses software and servos to drive a standard camera. The camera took some 80+ stills and then stitches the shots together to make a high resolution panorama.

Enjoy!

Cool, but try to find a frame for it! Now if he had done that over in the Mustang corral we'd have a good shot!!!

Once he perfects the technique (many others already have, I'm sure), we thought we'd make the picture into a mural or some wallpaper boarder. The picture looks tons better on his computer, much more so than online.

Notice the T6 taking off in the background. And it was the day that all of the T28's went out together. So the T6s were taking off and I think the T28s were taxied out. So the east side of the ramp was all but empty.... for a few minutes.

It's pretty cool that you can zoom in on the panorama and pic out a lot of details. it was kind of tough to tell if the jet coming in was a T37 or an A37 until I zoomed.

That is cool. Thanks for sharing. The stitching process made it look like the Corsair chopped the John Deere utility vehicle in half :D

Yeah, I've seen a few of his pics with headless torsos and such. Not pretty, especially on a ramp. He spends a lot of time editing, before and after the rendering. Took him 3 days to get the shot the way it shows.

Thanks to all the guys and gals who posted pics on the "first OSH thread". I'm paging back through it checking out all the comments and fantastic pictures. Wish I'd have known there was a Wixer Mixer.... of course then I would have missed SWINEFEST!
