This is from the Lockheed-Martin Fort Worth web site:

A-4, F-4 To 'Travel' on Clifford Street and I-820 Friday Afternoon (Posted: Thursday, July 09, 2009)

The Joint Reserve Base plans to tow two aircraft, an A-4 and an F-4, to Meacham Field this Friday at 5 p.m. The aircraft will be towed across the JRB runway, through Aeronautics' Transient Aircraft Ramp, south along the west side of Bldg 4/5, through the old railroad gate, and on to Clifford Street. From there, the aircraft will be towed on their gear west on Clifford, then around the 820 Loop to Meacham airfield, where they will go on display.

A friend of mine who works there is planning to try to shoot photos, and send them to me if he is able. I'll post them here on WIX.

It should be interesting to see how they fare, towing two big jets down a tremendously busy highway right in the middle of Friday evening rush hour traffic.

I don't know where the jets will be displayed at Meacham Field. Perhaps they're headed for the OV-10 Bronco Association's new facility at the far south end of the field, though there's nothing on the OBA web site about this. I don't think we're getting them (if we are, it's been the best-kept secret in aviation history). If anyone has more info, please share. . .

Cheers,

Why on Friday afternoon? How about Saturday @ 2AM?
That's just crazy talk.

It will be interesting to see which airplanes are coming over.

Well, at least it's an interesting reason (for once) for gridlock.

Well I'm sure that they are not coming to the VFM. I can think of two F-4's at Carswell (sorry I still can't call it by the new name) and both are painted in AF schemes (301st FW) and at least one A-4. I guess the Navy is trying to cut costs and let someone else take on the expense of maintaining them. I'm reasonably sure that they will be parked outside, same as they were at the base.

The only reason that I can think why they would do it on a Friday afternoon, is to get publicity - probably mostly bad for causing a huge traffic mess in FTW on a Friday afternoon rush hour.

I'll be at the museum tomorrow afternoon pulling planes out for our big hangar clean up, I'll snap some pictures if/when they go by. If anyone wants to join us this weekend cleaning up the hangar, feel free to come on by. We're doing a pot luck BBQ too, so there's food!

I just read this on the link that Zane posted earlier in the thread. Posted by 67 Cougar on June 3, 2009.

The base is trying to get rid of the F-4N and TA-4J that I described as parked out by themselves. The base has contacted the Museum in Pensacola asking for disposition instructions. Apparently, the Museum is looking for a new home for them, they were offered to Lone Star down in Galveston a few weeks ago, but they had to decline due to the cost of moving them.

I'm guessing these are them? I don't remember seeing them around the base back when I was in the Reserves there in '07, but it's a big base.

There was a big wreck on 820 around lunchtime and it was closed between Beach and Rufe Snow for quite a while.
