I grabbed these off of the 4th Fighter Group page on Facebook. These are just a few of the many excellent photo's that they have on there.

It would be great to paint a restored Mustang like this!

Never saw a Mustang with two rearview mirrors before - must have been nice in a dogfight.

Major Pierce Winningham "Mac" McKennon one of the most colourful characters who ever served in the 4Th Fighter Group. He looks like he just stepped out of central casting! Great photo never seen that one before. Those red painted rear views are Spitfire mirrors. When the 4Th converted from Spits to Thunderbolts, the pilots thought the mirror on the P-47 was inadequate, so, they slapped on a Spitfire one to supplement the smaller standard mirror on the T-Bolt. When they converted from 47's to 51's the practice continued. One former 4Th Pilot told me, that "Horseback Leader" Donald J.M. Blakeslee gave him "Royal Hell" for mounting 3 mirrors on his Mustang. Apparently they were always in short supply and were used by numerous other 8Th Air Force Fighter Groups.

Cheers,

Tom Walsh.
