I am lucky enough to live near March, which gives me a thrill of history everytime I drive by it. Over the years, and long before I lived in this area, I heard stories of countless folks who later became famous that served at March. I have heard stories from all manner of places of the activities that took place at the base....but have never seen a book about it or it's history.

Does anyone out there know if there is a book about March? There are a decent amount of details on Wikipedia, but it seems like there must be much more to the story than that.

Have you talked to the people at the March Field Museum?

Thanks for the obvious idea of dropping in on them and asking. Sometimes ya can't see the forest for the trees!

I dropped by today, and they have no books about the history of the field. One of the fellows said one of the units that used to be stationed there had written something back in the 1950's (if his memory served him right), but they had been transfered to Travis. He seemed to think there would be stacks of this book in a warehouse at Travis if anyone could ever find the right person to ask....

He thought the title was "65 years of service", or something close to that. So if anybody notices that title out there...I'm interested!

Years ago the March Field Museum sold a book covering the history of the base. I assumed they still had copies but apparently they don’t. It is a shame.

The March Field Story 1918-1978, 60th anniversary addition, The Office of the Historian, Headquarters Fifteenth Air Force, March AFB. Dr. R. Bruce Harley

Google it and maybe you can find a copy on the web

Probing the net for that book, I hit an interesting AF document that lists Official AF publications such as that book. It has listed publications for units, locations, commands and such. Might be an interesting source just for chasing this sort of thing.

Thanks for the title! The gift shop said they would be interested in publishing the book if it could be found again.

I have managed to find the author's daughter, who is organizing his papers, and am sending a message to her. If I can make contact I will pass along information to the museum in an effort to help them out too.
