Another Lake Michigan recovery coming..

Tue Jul 07, 2009 11:17 am

The Hangar One Foundation in Glenview,Illinois is planning on bringing up plane from Lake Michigan for their museum. www.hangarone.org. It doesn't say what type of plane they are going after. Glenview Naval Air Station was the starting point for all the pilots who qualified for carrier landings in Lake Michigan so obtaining a plane from the depths of Lake Michigan seems very appropriate!

After figuring out how to navigate that website, (Example of bad layout) I found a slideshow with a conceptual drawing of the proposed hall with what looks like a P-47D. :o

Hmmm, Army if im not mistaken.

Or maybe just a place holder?

How hard was it to find the slide show? It's the first thing you see.

Think the one shown underwater in the presentation is "their" bird? What is it? And what Navy plane had guns in the nose like that?

It's a Dauntless, and I think that's an old A&T Recovery picture from their website. I imagine that aircraft has been recovered ages ago. This project seems more like a "want to", rather than a "going to" at present... they have a lot of money to raise to get to their goal, but it's a worthy one too, and I hope they achieve it. I think they are really optimistic on the restoration costs though! $250k isn't very much... even for a static, with volunteers.

Oh yes, the Dauntless.

Wasn't it posted in one of the other recovery threads last month that they were definitely getting a Dauntless?
