Good home for a Corsair. Too bad it couldn't have been a flyer, especially since they also have the F4U-7 from the USS Alabama for display also.

I have some questions about that. I saw and photographed that machine (133704) while displayed at the USS Alabama as AU-1 129359 before it was heavily damaged, then I photographed her at the NMoNA "in storage" on the flight line. I asked the docent what her fate was to be and he told me "the Navy decided that she was not worth repairing as a whole aircraft and would part her out for other Corsair restorations."

When I walked into the door of the San Diego facility I thought my questions were answered, but the machine turned out to be the subject of this thread with no sign of 133704.

Anyone have an answer?

Gary

At least if it's only a loan, there's a chance someday!

The 'Bama bird is being done at the SDAM Annex at Gillespie Field.

From what I know, this bird is to be restored and going back to the Alabama Museum.

She is now inside the hangar being worked on.

Not sure what you wrote Rob but I know you're glad to see it out of the conex and being put on display.
But, the manner in which it was acquired was really cr*ppy and I hope Lori is able to get it back at the "verbally" agreed upon time.

More details, please. Not all of us are familiar with the story. Thanks.

Then why bring it up on a public forum?

I said what I wanted to say...It was a cr*ppy deal and I really hope it works out.
Any further details are of a personal nature and not appropiate for a internet forum.
BTW we had the wings in our hanger for a couple years and there off of a FG-1A.

Jack,

From the photos the outer panel looks like -5, or at least -1D or latter with metal skins applied to the fabric areas. I also did not see evidence of the earlier full length spar and hand hold on the tip. The leading edge 60 gal tank is in question too.

No offense intended. Just my eye on this.
