Jet & Radial Engine Storage/Shipping Containers

Hi All,

I was told this is THE place to come to find answers on amything related to war birds. I have a number of jet engine and radial engine containers that I need to get rid of. Lots of different sizes, mostly for Pratt & Whitney jet engines like the J57, and radials like the R-4360, and others. Does anyone know of any war bird museums or operators who might be interested in them? This is my first post, and I have not figured out how to post photos yet, sorry.

They make great back stops for target shooting with small caliber stuff, if you leave the can halves together and cut out a portion of the upper section, allowing the bullets to riccochet right down inside the can (and yes, this works quite well). Also, if you put a grate over the bottom half of one, they make a great place for stripping parts, as it'll catch all the nasty stuff that the EPA doesn't want going into the sewer system. And when it all dries out, you can take handfuls of it and feed it to Spotted Owls. (Okay, not really)

I wouldn't mind having a few more cans around here (mine all have engines in them), but the shipping costs so dang much, it's just hard to justify it, you know?

Isn't there any problem with using them for BBQ? Aren't there chemicals inside of the containers, from the oil and hydraulic fluids, that could make it to the meat?

I recall a case many years ago, where people were poisoned, because they were using 54 gallon barrels that had been cut in half, and were used for BBQ.

It's just a big metal can. Clean it up as you would any spill of petroleum products, and what you're left with is a big clean steel can.

We have the lid for an R-2800 can, and gasket, and the engine mount lugs. We used the bottom to ship an engine off for overhaul, and got it back on a skid--intentionally; the skid takes up a heck of a lot less room.

The R-2800 can is huge when assembled, and won't fit in a semitrailer upright, see. Weighs a ton, too.

The lid is basically about five feet high. The base was about 4 feet high. If you think it would be useful to you at all, PM me.

Start with a steam cleaner inside & out. Then use EZ-Off oven cleaner on anything that remains, finally sand blast the entire thing & do all the welding on of hinges & balance/counter weights etc. cut the needed vents, mount to trailer, paint the outside with BBQ paint (or JetHot ceramic coating if you have the $$$).
Then you *paint* the inside with veg oil & light a fire in there to seal/season it.

And, whats the difference between traces of residual oil (organic for piston engines, synthetic for turbines) and the KINGFORD lighter fluid (petrolium based) you squirt all over the coals to get them lit? (plus whatevers in the coals to propagate ignition and even burning).
A good, thurough cleaning with an oven cleaner or pressure washing and the aforementioned light swabdown with peanut cooking oil and away you go 'think it's time to flip that side of Beef over?'
