I just finished watching for about the 10th time now the Band of Brothers series. Who agrees with me when I say its an amazing series and its gets better each time you view it? There has been some talk lately about a similar series being made about the Pacific Theater. I hope that comes true.

Pat, one of the things that stands out in that series (at least to me) is the attention to detail that prevails thru out. Most Hollywood films of any kind of historical bend, fail in this regard, misserably! I guess those of us who are in the History business(I think our involvment with historical aircraft would be indicative) tend to be detail oriented. Get it right, prevails! As an example: In the begenning, the glider patch displayed on the "Oversee's" hat when wearing the class "A" uniform (the hat that looks like an envelope or an ice cream guy"s) is the early parachute style, and at the end of the movie, it is the one they still wear today with the parachute and glider.I Probably could discuss a ton of correct stuff they did on this flick, but I think that's the predominant reason we like the results. Hey, we won and it's a true story?

If they do a good a job as they did with the first series it should be rather Good! I'm sure there will be a laundry list of "mistakes" that will bug some of us, but taken as a whole, as well done. At least it won't be the usual mess of bad acting, bad uniforms, bad equipment, and normal sloppy Hollywood Claptrap!!

I just watched "Brothers" again a couple of weeks ago. I don't know a lot about the uniforms or infantry tactics, but I have to agree, the series just gets better every time I watch it. Each viewing I discover something new or a character story arc I'd missed before. I hope "The Pacific" is just as good!

Speaking of HBO miniseries on DVD, I just picked up the box set of "From The Earth To The Moon" at Sam's Club for 12 bucks! That works out to a dollar per episode (Band of Brothers was going for about $35.00)

The Pacific is in the "can" as they say, and being edited for release next Spring.

I know that the Costumer Joe Hobbs went to extrodinary lengths to be accurate with the uniforms for the Pacific .

When he was working on Band of Brothers, he needed overalls. They could not find anyone who made them in the UK or USA. Theyu had to go to a comppany in the far east who still used the same materrial that the WW2 ones wer made of. Joe sent them a list od sizes and wwiated an extrordinarily long time for them to in Hatfield. They finally showed up just as filming was commencing and all of the sizes were ignored. They were all something like a double XL. Check the briefing scenes for D-Day and notice how the men wearing them have rolled up sleeeves and cuffs.

That was about all they could do in the short time frame they had.

There's a DVD also in the works about Don Malarkey.

I agree that Band of Brothers is a fantastic series, and I'd go further to say it is one of the best productions ever made for television. It does indeed seem to get better with every viewing.

I think the acting alone is a stand out feature, especially as a lot of the actors were British, playing Americans. Damien Lewis was superb. And the biggest surprise for me was just how fantastic and convincing in the role Donnie Walberg was. Prior to this series I'd only known of him from that dire band New Kids on the Block. I never knew till this seris he also had some talent.

I've been following the progess of The Pacific miniseries for some years and look forward to it with great anticipation. I've seen a clip from it which was apparently released by mistake by an Australian network and has done the rounds of the world wide web. It showed a seaborne landing, and was just brilliant. This will be the best depiction of the Pacific War ever I think.

Jack, the DVD on Malarky that you mention, will this be a documentary? Or is it another dramatic version?

Band of Brothers should be shown in schools during history class. This is perhaps one of the greatest examples of what our freedom costs.

And on the special features of the blu-ray edition, the veterans apparently provide an alternate audio track.

In other words, the HBO folks found a way to make me buy it a second time!

Bill Guarnere and Babe Heffron recently traveled to Cleveland where they spoke at 4 schools. The series was used in history classes and with the different BOB books, to learn about WW2. They were sponsored by Ivan Schwartz who is the head of the Cleveland Film Office and the executive Producer of BOB.

They have spoken at many High Schools and this was the first where the kids knew and were interested about WW2

The DVD on Malarkey will be a documentary. My WC attorney is one of Don's best friends and does a 2 man program with Don on leadership using easy Company has it's baseline reference. Vance's meeting room at his office is called the Malarkey room is has numerous framed displays on the walls of original memoriabilia from Buck Compton, Dick Winters and Don. When he found out I was a fellow historian I instantly became involved with the DVD and just dropped of 200 DDay battle photos and later MG and Bulge paratrooper photos.
