Back when it was the USAF Museum and the P-47 wore a different scheme (1995). It's 56th FG, 61st FS but I'm not sure which pilot. Joe Powers or Robert Johnson? No nose art and the Ser No. is the aircracft's actual one. Enjoy

The fuselage codes are the same as Robert Johnson's aircraft. I believe the majority of the old paint job was from when the plane was refurbished by Republic in the early 60s for a publicity tour. She looks very nice in her new paint job, and it's neat to see parts of the original "Firey Ginger IV" displayed next to her (although personally I wish they'd stayed with 56th Wolfpack markings.)

Several months ago I posted the following on a couple websites:
I was stationed at Etain AFB, France in the early '60s. I had the privilege of seeing a great demo flight by a P-47 while I was there. I believe it was part of a special tour sponsored by Republic. Does anyone on this board have any information about that tour? My tired old memory needs a jump start.
I received the following information:
It was 1963 and yes it was Republic who brought it over to Europe then Republic test Pilot Glen Bach was the person who did all the flying. They (Republic) flew it during the 63 Paris Airshow it was parked next to the then new F-105D. The aircraft is P-47D 42-23278 it was one of the Bolts that Bob Bean try to import to Central America but end up sell it to Republic who later donated it to the USAFM in 1964 and were it is today still.
