To anyone in the Tuscon AZ. area:

Would anyone out there in the Tucson AZ.
area be able to assist me in confirming the
existence of a C-82 airframe rumoured to
be at National Southwest Alloy's scrapyard?

A photograph would be great also.

Cheers

Simon, although not in Tucson I visit often. The last time I was there (late March) I did not see the C-82 there. In fact I think it has been gone for some time.

IIRC the serial was 44-20033

Looking at aerial photos from several different sources, including the low-level obliques on Microsoft's Live Search Maps, there does not appear to be any recognizable remains from a C-82 in this scrap-yard. There are/were a couple of C-119's in the yard, but since I don't know the vintage of the photos, I cannot say if they are still there.

I'm getting conflicting messages from other sources who say
it is still there and (was) up for sale.

Could be wrong, but here is how I remember (left Tucson in 02)

C-82 was with C-133 (59-0531) at TIA both were scrapped on site and remains, which were the 133 Cockpit and the 82's outer wing panels and booms went to two different yards.

The last time I personally saw the remains of the packet at National was 00.

Hope that was some help.

C-82 status, Tucson

Airframe proper of the C-82 is long gone, but some components remain. I purchased some pieces that were left in February of this year.

Main items remaining in the yard include MLG, R and L, associated hydraulic pots, firewalls, nacelles, electrical boxes and components. No wings, fuselage section, control surfaces, etc. of this ship remain to my knowledge in the company's yards. The firm does have a C-119 sitting on gear that is worth saving, but that's another story.

Your contact at National would be Don Howell, and the e-mail address is HAVECO@aol.com

Hope this helps. I do know that in conversation with Mr. Howell he would like to see the remaining C-82 parts end up with someone who can use them for display or restoration before they are lost or destroyed. I can supply you with photos of said remains if you are interested.
