Warbird Information Exchange

Does anyone out there have or know of a photo of Karl Straub, shot down over Kent on the 28th August 1940? Is he still alive? Are there any photos of his '109 'White 13' WNr 1353 before or after it was shot down.

There is a group photo in "JG26, Photographic History of the Luftwaffe's Top Guns" by Don Caldwell, which features Straub, but attempts to contact Don, or Les Butler, for permission to use the photo have failed.

The photo is credited in the book to 'copyright: Buerschgens'.

Could I get permission to use this photo from Buerschgens, or anyone else, i.e. does anyone else have a copy of it?

The question is who or what is 'Buerschgens'???

As I've mentioned I did try to contact Don, by sending him an email, but although I got a 'read' receipt, he never actually contacted me!

I was rather hoping that someone who knows him might use this board, read this & have a word with him.

"Buerschgens" would be Josef Buerschgens, the first JG26 pilot to be shot down over England. Taken prisoner, he survived the war and I believe he's long since passed away. There's a famous pic of him just grinning away in full uniform being escorted by a similarly amused British soldier... the reason for the laughter is that he was being transported by train somewhere, and when queried for his ticket, he mentioned something about having a seasonal pass (he was quite fluent in English).

Anyway, Don Caldwell does post over at http://forum.12oclockhigh.net, he's also a busy guy so be patient.
