being a biplane, with visual characteristics of being obsolete.... no way. the pete was a slick bird though, & fast even with all that pontoon drag!!! it wacked a number of superior planes through the war in the hands of a skilled shot.

There are several pictures of abandoned/derelict "Petes" in Donald Thorpe's book on Japanese Naval Aircraft markings. The book and its companion volume on IJAAF markings were published in the late '60s, and unfortunately are long out of print. I still see them for sale from time to time, but they're getting expensive. Some of the information has since been superceded, but Thorpe was one of the first people to do comprehensive research on Japanese markings and camouflage, and both books are still "must haves" for any reference library.

I did read that the Indonesian AF used some captured/abandoned Pete's in their fledgling days and the skirmish with the Dutch. No pictures yet though. Tough puzzle!

Ooopppss- my error- I have Army camouflage and markings, not Navy. Did any have this book with option to make scans with images of this plane?

Yes, Indonesia have one plane used until.... '60 I think. I have small image dismantled in hangar.

Cheers

Hello everyone, I have a thread of Japanese Planes over here http://tinyurl.com/d8lvle These pics come from the Captured Enemy Equipment photos at the National Archives. I really don't know which is which but I have quite a few and just got more pics last week. Could be a "Pete" in the group. These pics were taken in late 1945 in Japan

What is the seventh on down, in US markings, which looks a little bit like a cross between a Dornier 17/217 and a Ju 88 ? Not to hot on Japanese aircraft apart from the more major types!!
