GALESBURG —

Thomas E. “Tom” Lowe, co-founder of the National Stearman Fly-In, has been selected to join the Illinois Aviation Hall of Fame.

The induction ceremony will be May 20 in East Peoria as the concluding event of the 2009 Illinois Aviation Conference.

The Fly-In, one of Galesburg’s premiere tourism events, has attracted as many as 140 airplanes — most of them the World War II-era biplane trainers used by the Army Air Corps and the Navy, as well as a handful of pre-war civilian Stearmans — in a single year. The 38th annual Fly-In will be held Sept. 7-13, 2009, at Galesburg Municipal Airport.

Lowe, 68, of Crystal Lake, and the late P. James “Jim” Leahy of Galesburg, both Stearman owners, became good friends and decided to invite other owners to Galesburg in 1972 for a one-time gathering. It was so much fun, Lowe says, they decided to do it a second time. In ensuing years, the Galesburg Fly-In became the “must attend” event for Stearman pilots, owners and enthusiasts.

“Thomas Lowe has put Illinois on the map by founding and nurturing the Stearman Fly-In ... an event that stimulates the local economy and promotes aviation,” says Susan R. Shea, Ph.D., director of the Illinois Department of Transportation’s Division of Aeronautics.

Congratulations Tom!!!! Thanks for all you've done for Galesburg, the Stearman and Warbird communities, and fledgling aviators everywhere.
