Warbird Information Exchange

Here's a series of photos I took today from the swivel seat in a T-6, while my dad flew us through a loop. It was a very weird feeling riding backwards through the loop.

Hope you enjoy it! It's definitely something you don't see everyday! I'd like to give a BIG thank you to Nathan, Steve and Laura!

Makes me more appreciative of gunners in dive bombers for sure! Was the effect diminished or heightened looking through the viewfinder or did you just point and shoot? Didn't see any evidence of a WHOPPER or COKE leaving in any of the pictures so must assume...............

Not quite wings-level over the top. Not that I could d any better... ;-p

Looks like a fun ride. But what's the deal with an aft-facing seat and a retractable greenhouse on a T-6?!?!

That was my thoughts back in 1988 at Kenosha when I did some video taping from the same position with another T-6 following us through rolls and loops. We had smoke on, so the trail T-6 was cutting in and out of the smoke. It was very cool. I only wish the tape and camera were mine. Since I only ever saw the footage on the black and white eyepiece monitor after we landed!

Keep up the photography. You got a real eye for it.

It's natural to feel exposed out there. As long as there were no burbles or jinks, there's nothing but positive G all the way around. I wouldn't do it ... but you could sit there with no belt through a loop. As far as all the other maneuvering you mentioned, that may be another story.

Gunnery Trainer.... Jim Harris's SNJ was set up like that and it was an excellent photography platform for air-to-airs....

Never did a loop facing backwards, I did do a whole flight turned to the side, holding a video camera aimed at a wing we had tuffed to study the airflow over the wing. That camera got heavy on the loops. Video came out too, it is real strange to see the tuffs stand straight up and then go forward while you are in flight.

That's a video of our first loop.

It felt pretty awkward, not to mention we had fried chicken and cherry pie before we went and flew!!!

I wasn't too worried about the seat coming out lol. I had my trusty parachute on! I used the view finder on the loop, and that was somewhat disorienting. I definitely thought about Dauntless and Helldiver guys pulling up during a bomb run, that would be crazy!

I took some more neat shots, but I'll post those soon.

I have to agree with Ken on the positive G's, did a roll a few weeks ago, after an air to air session, and found myself glued to the seat all the way through, in Chris Prevost's SNJ flown by Tom Morris. I didn't think to take pictures as I was holding two cameras, but half way through the roll, started doing the same as Trey did; I have only half a series.
