Hi
I hope some of you can help!
What was the standard finish for the US 75 gallon droptank during service? I've done a little research and found they were made by Mullins and are pressed steel. I don't remember seeing any rusty looking ones so i assume they were painted (silver?)
Thanks in advance
Ben

I was under the impression that they were often times coated with the silver dope that they used on the control surfaces.

Thanks Gary
I guess paint is an easier option for a modern restoration.

I think the paper tanks were doped silver but I think the steel tanks were painted with 'aluminized' clear lacquer or enamel. At least all of the AAF drops I have seen and owned had evidence of aluminum paint and rarely any primer underneath.
Here is a great USAF shot of 108 gallon paper drops on a bomb trailer
Here is a shot of a steel tank with the original finish and a water transfer decals

Thanks guys
On a related note, are the nut type fittings on the tanks underside some sort of drain bung? or to stop the thin tank wall getting damaged whilst on the ground?
Cheers

You are correct, they are a drain plug.
