Dick Phillips asked me to post this for him:

At an aviation lunch recently the subject of supersonic aircraft came up, and some one said that there were never any full mach 1+ aircraft with their engines mounted on pylons. I said, hang on, how about the B-58 Hustler? Guys said, "oh yea, forgot about that one." Now the question is, were there any others with pylon mounted engines?
Any ideas guys?

Dick Phillips

There is a private "Biz" jet on the boards, the Aerion, supposedly good for 1.6 Mach, but at an estimated 80,000,000 each, with today's economy...we'll see if it ever happens!

Most supersonic aircraft have been fighters, with one or two engines buried in the fuselage.

The XB-51 could nudge Mach 1; not sure if its "chin-mounted" engines would count as pylons.

The BAC Lightning had over-the-wing drop tanks on pylons, but they obviously didn't produce thrust. (Well, maybe indirectly.)

Interesting observation.

DC-8? Once...

The story...

Do the Concorde and the B-1 count since the engines are not in the fuselage?
