A tour of a B-17F & B-29 - Seattle

Sun Apr 05, 2009 11:25 pm

Last Thursday I had the good fortune to get to tour the B-17F and B-29 in the Boeing 2-40 building in Seattle. The two aircraft are truly beautiful as you'll see from the pictures. The nose of the B-29 still has a ways to go but the aft section looks amazing and we even got to operate the upper aft turret! As for the B-17, I don't know what more they could do to it as it looks amazing.

This is my friend trying out the sight/turret setup. You can see the turret in the background.

Great stuff!

Good to see these airplanes are getting the care they deserve!

One question for our B-17 guys....
The walk way around the ball turret on this airplane goes around on the right side. Every B-17 I have been in has the walk way going around the left side of the turret.

I found a pic of Memphis Belle and that walk way goes to the right...

Is this an F- vs G- model change? or is it a manufacturer difference? Boeing vs. Lockheed?

Curious.

Fantastic! How is it you were able to tour these 2 great looking planes? Is a reservation or appointment necessary?

The guy in charge of the B-29 is in my plastic model club and invited anyone who wanted to check it out. It was an opportunity nobody in their right mind would pass up!

I love the 20AF control wheel cap on the pilot's yoke of the B29.

Thanks for some detail shots - clear as you always do.
