Looks like a shame to me.

What is that aircraft, in the upper, right hand side of the photo?
The XB-19??? DC-4E??? Or is it just the light/shadows?

I don't think ANY lights and shadows would make anything look that big that wasn't that big to begin with. Whatever it is, it's L-A-R-G-E.

Mudge the visually impaired

i saw that one.., it dwarfs the B-29's around it!

I was thinking C-124 Globemaster.,. but the rear fuselage looks angled up too much.

I think your right Cubs. If it is the XB-19 that would date the photo between Aug. 1946 and June 1949
when it was scrapped.

Check out the B-29 in the lower right corner, having both gun turrets and black undersides; a rarity to have both. Anyone know how many in the Marianas had that treatment?

Interesting there is no bomb group Bomb Group on the tail of that one.

A lot of planes from the 444th BG 58th BW Tinian.

Can't wait to see Scott's analysis...

the 314th BW based at North Field Guam, began to paint the majority of their undersides matt and or shiny black by early August 1945.

This aircraft made a lot of bombruns, then below the 'V' is a POW supply drop as well.

Contrary to popular belief they kept their armament as well.., but cut back on the amount of ammunition they would carry.

Wow..that pic shows just how bit the XB-19 really was! What a shame it wasn't preserved. That and the XB-15 would look great in the NMUSAF's experimental collection.

<disclaimer> This is not in any way meant to slam the NMUSAF. Those birds were scrapped long before the museum as we know it even existed.
