A good friend of mine who flew B-24's in WWII is looking for some information on the B-24D "Bomerang". The photo is from a large board mounted print taken from the wall of the old New Departure Bearing Company in Meriden, CT. My shots of it are not perfect because the photo is badly bowed.
He thought it was taken At Westover AAF on the aircraft's War Bond Tour, but I believe it was either taken at Bradley Army Air Field, or Pratt & Whitney's Rentschler Field. The article that he had about the crews wartime visit to the New Departure Company is also below.
My friend Walter is looking for some info and I don't have it for him so maybe some one here can help.
1: He'd like to know if the aircraft actually flew in the first Ploesti Raid?
2: What the aircraft's number might have been?
3: What air force was this B-24 assigned to prior to arriving in North Africa for the Ploesti Mission?
4: Did it return to England and then fly with the Eighth for a bit before being sent home? (and if it did, what Group and squadron did it fly with?)
5: Any other information about the crew or crews that flew the aircraft and info on the War Bond Tour, dates in Connecticut, ID for anybody in the photo, etc.?
