New build warbirds for 2009???

Tue Mar 31, 2009 8:41 pm

"News release - April 1 2009

Boeing is to reinstate a limited production batch of 17 brand new B-17E/F/G models to help the company thru the recession and to lift sagging sales.
The B-17 was a famous WW2 bomber used in Pacific and European combat zones for bombing of targets and to kill people.

With major airline order failing to appear and new 787 program slipping, Boeing excutives have announced that warbirds like B-17 which bring much joy to many people world over at airshows nowdays, has a better chance to save the company in 2009.

Boeing will announce later this year where to build the new B-17 - likely locations are China or in India as it will save money and wages.
They promise to ensure rivets are ok before they are built, hoping to avoid a major issue that has suffered the 787 program.

Rich American buyers are expecting to snap up these new build planes as the last one came off line in 1945.

If this is successful other major builders like Lockheed maybe resinstate the P-38 and F-80 back into limited build for the warbird community.

Contact Boeing media for further information."

Who knows where this might go.. resurgance of warbird fever?

EADS has also said that they are tooling up again to produce Bf-109's to provide a side income to offset their A350 program.

Actually, I understand that the planes will be built by GM under government contract as part of the economic recovery plan, since building warplanes really helped our auto industry recover from the last depression. GMC will build B-17s, while GM's Cadillac division will build P-51s (the Cadillac of the sky) and Chevy will build P-40. Pontiac will build P-47s. Ford will of course be building B-24s, with it's Lincoln division building B-29s (instead of the slightly larger Navigator SUV.) Chrysler's Dodge division will build B-25 Mitchell's while Plymouth will build B-26 Marauders.
