I've always been fascinated by Vietnam era jets and the different design philosophies of the F4 and the Mig 17 and 21
I spoke with an ex Indonesian Air Force pilot and he flew the Mig 15, 17 and 19 and he LOVED the Mig 17 and in fact a lot of the Indonesian Mig 21 pilots liked the the Mig 17 for pure flying qualities
This is quite a long read so grab a coffee before you get into it , very interesting !

I'm still looking for an article on the F4 versus Mig 17 , has anyone got a link ?
Any WIX pilots that have flown the Mig 21 and 17 , I would be interested in hearing your impressions.
I was lucky enough to have dinner and a long chat with a veteran Israeli F4 pilot last week and he loved the F4 , he said it was the last real pilots plane that really demanded understanding but once you got in the groove with the aircraft it was rewarding. He felt the later generations of fighters were not as nice to fly as they had a lot more black boxes and algorithms (to keep the pilot out of trouble) but reduced feedback to the pilot. Comments ?
