Great pics as always, Jack. Love the B-25 with an angry Vesuvius in the background.

Didn't an entire squadron of B-25's get showered by good old Mt. V's extremely hot ash fallout and the Army had to send technicians to do repairs including new envelopes for all the flight controls to get the aircraft out?

I know I've seen a photo of at least one B-25 partially buried in ash, with the fabric control surfaces shredded. I seem to recall reading that all the ash-damaged aircraft were scrapped.

I read somewhere that between 75 and 85 B-25s were damaged because of that eruption. The 340th Bomb Group was the unit most heavily affected. Dad was in Italy (I'm not certain how near) at the same time and said it was quite a sight to see all that soot in the air.
