Today's picture is of a P-47 that had a serious problem!



According to the caption the main oil line was cut by flak! 1st Lt. Edwin King of Ohio was on a strafing mission near Brescia, Italy in the Po Valley. After being it, the oil line drained with the results seen above and additionally covered the pilot and his parachute. With his feet in a puddle of oil, the pilot successfully flew it back and landed at base just as the engine froze. It was the P-47's 110th mission.

Wow, amazing story and pictures. That must have been a stressful ride home.

If there was a quote contest on the picture though, I'd have to go with:

"Turn your airplane into a night-fighter in one simple step."

Reminds me of the CASTROL commercial with 'Danger Sullivan' and the CAMARO on the jump ramp getting hit with 'engine sludge'
It can't be a lot of fun A) not being able to see, and B) getting your face French Fried every time you poke your head out for a look-

If I remember right, there was almost 29 gals of oil in that hopper on that R2800. Looks like he lost most of it and was wearing the rest
Nice job of nursing it home. That engine is one tough mill, but from the looks of this airplane those temp limits must have been at and even beyond their top end as he brought it back.
Nice job! The trick would have been to power it back as far as you could without taking it into reverse command where you would have to power up to maintain altitude. It must have been a real tightrope for him.

No offense taken! I think I may be finally getting a bit thicker-skinned. What bothers me the most is that I don't remember that '05 post! If I had, I probably wouldn't have dug it back up! I guess I'm starting to lose it.
