OK Jack you de man! Maybe you can help me. My Uncle was commander of the 405th fighter group (Squadron?) a P-47 outfit and I cannot find anything about it in WWII. Do you have any pics or info?

Thats it. My Uncle was Col. Robert Lee Deleshaw. Would be neat if some pictures of him showed up. He retired a Lt. General in the late 60s' after serving in post war Europe, Viet Nam, and was Vice TAC Commander at one time, and Commandant of Special Ops at Hurlburt, IG, etc.

There is a history of the 405th called Thundermonsters Over Europe published about 15 years ago. Abebooks.com have three copies on offer, two in England, one in Australia. Not too expensive and certainly worth getting if you want to know all about your uncle's outfit. I don't have a copy but I guess there must be a photo of Col Deleshaw in it. When the group left England for France in July 1944, he personally presented the group's flag to Christchurch Priory, close to their airfield. It still hangs in an honored place in this ancient church.

In the words of RAF Christchurch's Operations Record Book; "The colours will remain forever hung in the Priory in perpetuity as a symbol of unity and the cause for which both nations are now fighting. Also as a lasting reminder of the Group's stay on this airfield."
