What I'm doing this weekend

Fri Jun 27, 2008 9:16 pm

As many of us are following the threads here involving the various degrees of how a post can be mis-read or how negative a positive comment is taken. I Will be off to help at a car wash for one of my JV Hockey players tomorrow. I have learned over the years that all kinds of people will have all kinds of opinions about what I say, how I say it and the aircraft that I work on. If I offer information, offer a comment or post a photo I subject myself to the opportunity to be criticized, thought a individual of questionable judgement and whatever else someone can conjure in their mind, whether stable or not. Usually this is not the case but it can happen at any time. Others will be little served nor will I change much if I run off my mouth or fingers to tell of my total dismay over some item, color, photo, request, food group or peer group that someone here is doing, touching or flying.
This weekend I will help run a car wash to help raise funds to support the family of a 15 yo hockey player who broke his neck wrestling an opponent who bothered him too much in a hockey game. Since june 14th his mom hasn't left the hospital where he is showing very slow recovery of the spinal cord injury suffered even after after 2 surgeries. Hopefully on Sun he will be up to a visit from his coach of a couple years. I haven't seen him since I helped him be lifted on a back board and lifted on a stretcher to leave the ice. This is every coach and parents nightmare.
Bill has given a way for those who offered to help out with his repairs. I wish I was in a position to help him. The best I could offer is my handiwork which is a bit out of the way and being performed by others who are closer.

What Rich said.
Take a minute and and post a short note in that young fellows guestbook.
It may well be the most satisfying thing you do today.
He's got more to worry about after all than cut up U-Boats and debating
shades of blue paint
Don't waste your time posting on this thread post on his, like I did :!:

Just back from the car wash.
Probably 40+ kids and adults helped out. Probably 200+ cars came through until I had to leave. A fantastic outpouring of support.
Cars were lined up 10 deep for most of the morning.

We were by the road with signs-

Passing out the brochures-

Washing the wheels prior to entering the car wash-

And drying on the way out-

A wonderful and touching day.
Now I have my 10 yo hockey game later this afternoon.

Today Ben was moved from the ICU to a step down unit.
Thats good news as now he can travel to Shepherd Center Rehab Facilty in Atlanta GA on Tues.
It is sad to see him move so far away but great that he will start the next phase of his recovery.
BTW my Squirt team won so we play in the championship tomorrow.

Now they can afford the 7K air ambulance ride to Georgia.
Another obstacle passed and prayer answered.
To any that have given or posted a note Thanks!!!

I did get to see Ben at Jefferson Hospital today.
It was great to see his smile and his face light up when I walked up. I guess I didn't yell at him too much over the last couple of years.
It is tough to see him in this condition though. There is nothing easy about what he is going through. To go from a strong leader on the team to being injured in this way still is hard to believe.
Remember him in your prayers.

Ben was moved to Shepherd Center in Atlanta a week ago.
Ben is pretty down and not wanting to eat.
I know his family reads the notes posted here;
http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/benstear
Perhaps we should send some words of encouragement and prayers as well.
Thanks,
Rich

I wish Ben the best in his recovery. I left a message in the guestbook, I hope it helps.

If there's anything that I can do to help, let me know. I was a goalie for 25 years here in northern NJ. It's great that you've done this for Ben.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at the BENefit!

Michelle McCallister

In terms of the Benefit- There will be a flight in Bald Eagle up for grabs as well as a flight in our SNJ. Possibly I will be able to make the BE Flight a sealed Bid affair so even a WIXer can mail in a bid. If it happens I will make it known.
Thanks to all who have offered their prayers and/or a donation.
He is being transferred to a Shriners Facility in the Philly area.
