Another picture from my wife's great grandfather, Col Donald T. Winder (thanks again to the folks who helped us recover these pictures.)

Any guesses as to What and Where??

It looks like a Zero to me. Can't help with much more than that, though.

The "what" is an A6M3 "Hamp" (Zero with squared-off wingtips.) The "where" could be anywhere in the SWPA.

Not quite true................
No trees so it's a atoll or Munda Pt. My quess is Biak, Tarawa
or Iwo Jima.

my father in law landed there with the first wave and spent 6 days in combat as a navy medic attached to the marine corp.

he wrote THE best book on the Iwo campaign (quote from the commandant of the 5th marine division)

You ain't kidding. From the other photos I have the place "was" covered in palm trees until the Navy commenced artillery bombardment. The pictures are post bombardment and you would think they were taken of a nuclear holocost.

Not Tarawa or Peleliu. To be honest I had ever heard of this battle before we recieved these pictures.

In fact this past week was the anniversary of this battle.

The Battle for Kwajalein was 31 Jan to 3 Feb 1944, is it Roi-Namur airfield ?
