I was fortunate to spend a day on the HMS Ark Royal during her final
deployment in 1978. 8)

I'll bet that was cool. What became of the HMS Ark Royal after demob? Was it scrapped? The British F-4s had RR engines right?

Oh, only for the last 100 years or so. I'm sure the boys in Nelson's navy had access to the rum. ;)

Indeed. It's a disgrace that the largest surviving preserved C20 British warship is a City Class cruiser HMS Belfast. Not a single battleship or carrier has been preserved. A shocking omission for a maritime nation.

Of course HMS Ark Royal (III) of W.W.II vintage was found where it had sunk, and is relatively intact. But as Dirk Pitt's fictional and they can't find the cash to support a Vulcan in the UK, it'll be staying where it is.

There is a current (fifth) Ark Royal in the RN.

The Arks:

The British (RN) F-4K and (RAF) F-4M Phantoms were, indeed, Spey engined.

There wasn't any for them to share.

The final RN rum ration issue took place on July 31st 1970.

Scrapped in 1980.

I'll bet they wished they still had her in 1982 in the South Atlantic.

She would never have made another 4 years service.....sadly the Ark was a very tired old girl with a hull that was shot to bits and leaked like a sieve.
