I have seen that bit in front of the drop tank on several pics. It does look rather odd though!

It's aparently an airflow improvement device used when the external tank is unstalled.

Thank you. I don't think I've seen that feature on any other aircraft. I wonder if it was a NACA solution for an observed problem?

Since the BF2C was one of the first uses of the NACA cowl it is probable that NACA was involved in a general drag reduction.

If I recall correctly they had a bad habit of shedding their top wing and were withdrawn from service rather quickly with many being dumped into the water off North Island.
