SE.5a – THE GREAT WAR’S GREATEST FIGHTER?
When debate rages, as debate tends to do, over which the greatest fighter of WWI was, the usual suspects quickly arise, for Germany it is the impressive Fokker D.VII, the French would point to the SPAD XII, whilst the British contenders are usually the Sopwith Camel and the Se.5a. In this article Gene De Marco describes flying the latter, one of the three authentically reproduced examples now operating in NZ. The article is complimented by some lovely air to airs of the three together- a sight not seen since the end of the Great War.
P-38 PERFECTION!

Scott is renowned for his stunning air to air photography, and his shots of the ‘Shiny Lightning’ will leave you in no doubt as to why!

Continuing our look at the P-38 survivors we round up the rest of the ‘L’ models before touching on the earlier variants which will feature in the next issue along with an overview of crash wrecks and recovered relics.
A.&T. -RECOVERING HISTORY
There has been much debate over the aircraft that litter the bottom of Lk.Michigan. Some three dozen were recovered as a result of a relationship between the Director of the NMNA and A.&T. Recovery before a change in Navy policy saw this halted. In this article Taras Lyssenko describes the history of A.&T., their operations to recover these wrecks and the company’s hopes for the future.
As readers will discover in the ‘news’ section of the magazine, these hopes are about to be realized!
WACO RETURNS
A glamorous Waco UOC cabin touring aircraft was purchased new by the Marlborough Aero Club in May 1936. It was impressed into service during WWII, survived and returned to MAC in 1946. It stopped flying in 1958 and was shipped offshore, never to return to the skies and destined to fade into history.....or was it!? Remarkably the Waco has found a new home -and that co-incidentally is the one it started with! The future will see this historic aircraft back where it belongs, in familiar skies over Omaka airfield.
ANSON UPDATE
Regular readers will have been following our coverage of a remarkable effort being expended on the Anson Mk.I which is under restoration to fly with the Reid family of Nelson, NZ. Over the past year an inordinate amount of time has been dedicated into fitting out the aircraft’s interior to ensure its authenticity once completed. We take a look at progress, which is nothing short of amazing!
