Thanks for posting the photo...PV-1's and then late in the war PV-2's were used throughout the Pacific and some were also used as nite fighters(PV-1's) . PV-1's could actually out run and turn the tables on some of their opponants. They suffered when fully loaded for the long haul up in the Aleut. campaign...many were lost on take-off or landing due to high speed and icy conditions :cry:

On a few limited occasions the RNZAF Venturas were detailed to act as day fighters (interceptors as cover for other bombers). They however never met any oposition as far as I've found so far.

The Hudsons could also outrun, out-manoeuvre and escape fighters including Zeros, much to the surprise of the US guys who reckoned our crews would be sitting ducks in them. No doubt our guys were pleasantly surprised too.

Ah, that's a great one, jack--thanks for putting it up.

Those prop contrails are a sight to see. It doesn't take a terribly humid day to see them, either. Here's a pic of our PV-2 drawing screw-threads in the sky in a photo pass two years ago:
