If an airplane were a road vehicle?

Sat Oct 18, 2008 2:54 pm

Hi everyone,

I thought of an interesting question to pose to y'all.

If an airplane were a road vehicle, what car/bike/truck would it most be like?

For me the most obvious is the North American T-6/Harvard, which if it were a road vehicle would be a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. I think this because the Harvard is noisy, but in a beautiful way, isn't very fast, but a real hoot to fly. When it idles it's got a wonderful chug-a-lug sound, like a Harley, and yeah....

Let's see what else there is.

What would a P-51 Mustang compare to? Or a Spitfire? Would a B-24 be like a Mack Truck? etc?

Cheers,

David

The Mustang car is named after the P-51 so that is fitting. I think that the P-40 would be a Charger. The F-86 a 57 Chevy, T-33 a Thunderbird, and the Shelby Cobra an F-100.

P-40 = Studebaker Hawk: Update of an earlier design kept in production long past its prime but continually developed as a strong (if not spectacular) performer.

Jenny = Model T

Yeah, thats what the guy at the Toll Booth on the Golden Gate Bridge asked me when I brought this accross this year with my wife!
Then of course, taking such great pictures there, we had to drive through the city of San Fran and take more pics around town!

Toll Booth Guy charged me for 2 vehicles! and the guy at the gas station had a few words for me 2 along the way!

While digging through some old photos, I found some shots from Universal Studios I got of a P-51 race car and another that used P-38 parts and the engine/cowling off a P-40. I know these were built for a movie, but I never saw the film they were made for. I'll throw them on the scanner and post them here eventually...

If the Super Hornet were a road vehicle it would be a trailer.

How dare you insult a T-6 like that, I compare a T-6 to my Goldwing, it is a classic, best in it's class, runs forever, and is very easy to maintain.

Now a T-28, is a John deere tractor with a stuck throttle, exhaust leak and asthma

HERE YOU GO, the ultimate airplane car!

I have no idea what movie this was made for, although I do recall catching part of the film on Tv many years ago. Note the Mustang car in the background, just a complete airframe, sans wheels on truck runing gear. God alone knows what real airplane parts went into this, if any...

I guess I was lucky when I went through with a Stearman project a few years ago. Of course, the fuselage was wrapped up with clear stretch wrap (no fabric). In fact, I think only one person on that whole trip expressed any interest to what was on my trailer. Nice pics, BTW!
