Armistice day. We will remember them.

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds, — and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of — wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air. . . .

Up, up the long, delirious burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or ever eagle flew —
And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God

Of all the years that I've known the story of John Gillespie Magee Jr. I never knew he was only 19 when he lost his life.

It sends a chill down my spine thinking about how young he was when his life came to an end.

It reminds me of when I went on an air cadet exchange program to Holland at the age of 18. As part of the tour we went to the Arnhem WWII Cemetary. Looking at the head stones of all the fallen gave me the same chills, especially when I read their ages... 20, 19, 18, some 17...
