Memphis used an "M" as a tail marking.

In the immdiate post-war years (pre- Korean War) the letter "M" was also assigned to aircraft operating from the USS Midway. Ref: "Navy Air Colors Vol 2" by T.E.Doll pg 7 and 13.

Looks like VF-1B became VF-21 on September 1, 1948, six months after they returned from the deployment depicted in the photo. Not sure if they retained the same insignia or not, or if Ken's photo was before or after that date.
