Hi Guys,

I thought my esteemed american cousins would be interested in some pics i took today of some of the 8th's bases as they are today in East Anglia. Unfortunately i couldnt post them on here direct from my computer so there over on flypast forum, see here:

http://forum.keypublishing.co.uk/showthread.php?t=85363

I know these are very poignant for many of you having had family members serve at these bases during the war and im proud to say i am one of the few who serve to keep their memories alive over here in the uk. Its just ashame i cant help save these historically significant sites from ever increasing disappearance. If only these airfields could talk....

Great pics. Interesting to see how the countryside has taken over those bases. I have a book titled "One Last Look" (pub. 1983) by Philip Kaplan & Rex Alan Smith that has ground pictures showing some of the remaining buildings of a few of the bases you took pictures of.

Thanks for the great photos. I've been taking similar photos of many of the training fields in the middle USA for a number of years, but it is quite a different thing to see the stations from which brave young men went to battle.

Those are really neat pictures. I used to spend a lot of time (usually at work) on Google Earth trying to find the old bomber bases without much luck. I can see why now!!

B-17 Buff,

Thanks for the photos and posting for us on WIX. I find this topic to be of great interest to many here. If I were in "jolly ol England" I would have a proton magnatometor or ground penetrating radar in use on many of these fields! Did some digging at Freeman Field USA and had some success.

Interesting trip down memory lane for me. I was at Lakenheath for 3 years and remember going to Alconbury when it was still an open and active USAF base to visit one of my buddies from tech school. IIRC, they had F-4s there at the time in addition to the TR-1.

Bentwaters/Woodbridge was also open then too, with A-10s. Cold War days were an interesting time.
