A quote from the article:
"Experts from the group said they are concentrating on locating the engine block, the landing gear, the tires and the gas tank, because they were all bulletproof."

Ya just gotta love the experts.

A co-worker just sent that too me and  was my first reaction. Like you said, "gotta love the experts." There are many men not with us who wish said components were truly "bullet-proof."
52 years of river debris, currents and dredging I am sure not much is left.
There are plenty of aircraft THAT WE KNOW about rotting outside that could use the dollars and attention....ehem....Barksdale B-24....ehem.
Regards,
Mark

"Since then the mystery has grown, sparking theories about secret cargo, UFOs and government cover-ups."

That makes me think this might have been the B-25 they talked about in one of those UFO Hunters shows on History Channel.

I won't rain on their parade. Anything or group that tries to save an ac is good with me.

I believe the crashed B-25 due to "mysterious UFO Substance" was up in Washington state area. Strange cargo caught fire and melted right through the aircraft causing it to crash! At least that is what the guy on TV said, and I always believe them!! Golly, nothing in a warbird that would burn is there? Gotta be aliens!

Ah yes this is an oldie but goody story. I have been hearing about this one since I was just a pup. There have been so many efforts to find that aircraft over the years. I'm sure Chris aka MustangDriver has been out there with a snorkel a few times looking himself.
