This photo by Pat & Linda Carry displayed on the P-38 Association website (http://p38assn.org) shows P-38M 44-53087, but without the radome or black paint. Can anybody tell from the fuselage code or the nose art what its purpose was? Trainer?

At first glance, the tail number looks like it has a "9" rather than an "8" but zooming in makes it seem more like an "8". This then would be the same plane as in my avatar at left.

Thanks.

Bill

It's 44-53097 P-38L-5-LO. It's the old Champlin Fighter Museum a/c that's now in Seattle.

It was a P-38M night fighter they later remover the second cockpit and changed it back to a standard L model.

Oh.

I was hopeful they had found an in-service photo of our old photo bird. :(

Still hoping to see the former CAF P-38 become a dark fighter from the NIGHT!
