My view of Reno (lots of pics)

Sat Sep 27, 2008 12:46 am

It's taken longer than intended, but here is my take on Reno.

One of the highlights of the week was the Warlock pit party when me, Bud Granley and Al Goss sang Folsom Prision Blues with the band. Another highlight was Steve Dickey bringing me a couple of 12 packs of Dr. Pepper from Dublin, Texas. About the only downside was when I told an aquaintence of mine to come by the T-6 pits and visit and this individual said, in not so many words, that he was just a little better than that and wouldn't be seen with the T-6 guys. I saw him other places and we always visited but never in the T-6 pits. Oh well

My fiance, Kristine, went for her first time and loved it as well. It helped that a friend took her up for her first T-6 ride. That's the only thing she'd been in besides the C-17. It also helped that my Canadian friends and some others, took her in to their pits and treated her like they'd known her all of her life! She got to meet a lot of people that have been good friends to me and get over the fence and out on the flightline during the races. She also was recruited for plane cleaning detail. When we flew home on Monday morning, she said she finally understood why I like old airplanes. No other woman has ever said that to me! She also says I need to buy a T-6 and Tigercat!

While I'm typing, I have to say this. Don't watch the movie "Thunder over Reno". You will turn off the DVD player and be far dumber than you were when you started the movie! Not even the great flying sequences can save this pig of a movie. I'm all about supporting projects that involve nearly all aspects of aviation, but that movie is $20 I wish I had back in my pocket!! I can't believe the people involved in it had the nerve to ever make it public!

Thanks for saving me $20. I figured it would suck, but I wasn't sure. I watched some of the filming and wondered a lot about it...........

Nice pix!

I keep seeing pix of Mr Odegarrd's beautiful Super Corsair at Reno and was wondering if he ever races it for real? Have seen him do the "demo" races at several airshows and got a big grin from him once when I asked if he ever gave it full throttle during the demos. Didn't think to ask him if he ever raced it for real at Reno.

Sorry if this is a dumb question of has been asked before

Thanx for the great photos Brad, I stayed down to get taxi shots while everone else left so I had to walk back.
And yes Mr. Odegaard does race for real, he even has ADI, the tank sits in the former jump seat.

Thanks Brad for the pics. Glad yall had a good time. We were on vacation in Panama City Beach. Could not be at Reno, but I had my laptop with me & was able to listen in to Race Control/Reno Tower by way of a streaming audio put up by some guy. That was pretty cool. Also thanks for saving me 20 Bucks.
Regards
Robbie :D

Why don't you rent the movie to WIX folks for a buck, then when one person is done they just mail it to the next person in line. I'm sure you'll get your $20 back and save a bunch of us a few dollars.

3 Tigercats in the air together, I'd love to see that. Heck, I've yet to see one in the air.

Regarding the F2G-1D, I always thought the 4360 should walk away from everything in the field also but I've asked both Bob Odegaard and Mike Brown - they both say Big Bossman (the F7-F) is faster (and it's "only" in the Silver Race as well).

They say the Super Corsair has 'too much wing' to go much faster than the mid 400's. Having said that, I hope they don't change a thing on that piece of living history!

Here she is at OSH 08:

After all these years I finally got the prop tip contrails :D

The Chino Super Corsair racer had about 4 feet cut off of each wing. There is also a bearing that tends to spin and sieze the engine that requires a dowel for racing at substantially above rated power. It also had a large spinner, a tighter cowling, huge wing fillets, different oil coolers and oil coller inlets/exhausts and spraybars for the engine cylinders and oil coolers which Odegaard's airplane does not AFAIK. The early Skyraider Aeroproducts prop was worth a few MPH as well. The Chino Super Corsair did a 445+ race average in 1988. Standing at the pylons and listening about 10 seconds after the Super Corsair passed it sounded like a tornado was brewing. When a Mustang passed you didn't hear much at all. The Super Corsair had to push a lot more air out of the way even in it's highly modified form.

Sorry to stray off topic on memory lane... :?
