My guess is scrap aircraft and not much of the people either. Sad.

IMHO it should be left alone as a grave site. The airframe is garbanzo anyway. However, I always wondered what that fate of the third VS-44 was.
The XPBS-1 had a similar fate in the Pacific. It apparently hit some floating mega-FOD and flipped violently over. The upside down wings were later raised with what was left of the fuselage attached. If I can ever manage photobucket, I'll send a photo of the raised wreck.
The third airframe sits in restored static spendor at NEAM looking good, the sole surviving big 'clipper'.
