There have been UFO stories for decades, but still some mystery. Which common explanation makes the most sense? Are they super hi tech visitors from other planets? Are they just hoaxes or figments of imagination? Are they natural phenomenon? Are they something else?

Some reports are probably hoaxes, some natural. But one explanation seems more likely; that of being high tech or experimental military aircraft. The History Channel shows video of flying wings and saucers from designer John Frost of Avro in England in 1953 on. Not much doubt these are real photos and of the machines flying; even if not very fast or even out of ground effect. A more intriguing story is of a man who claims to have visited a US base in the 60's and was shown real examples of several advanced US flying saucers. No real mystery of propulsion then, they were jets, and were said to be high performance. There were also stories of even more advanced models. An interesting and somewhat believable program, worth watching.

I have also seen a real "flying saucer". Well, I didn't see it fly, but I saw the craft, a piston engine ducted fan homebuilt and I was told it flew once, but not too well. The flight was said to have scared the Indians on a reservation badly.

When SR71 flights were declassified a few years back it cleared up slew of UFO reports...

& some silly old nag in the UK last week was raising hell about a UFO her husband saw.. & then she describes the Vulcan almost to the rivet & it just happened to be flying over her village when the *UFO incident" took place..

.. altho she said it was "almost totally silent" so it appears her hearing aid batteries need replacing.. 8)

I'm not saying they don't exist however, that would be the ultimate arrogance.

The SR-71 flys fast and high, so high as to be almost invisible. It would not fit any of the type of reports of the low flying or hoovering type of UFOs, but the Avro type saucer would, except as seen in the movie it doesn't move very fast.

Even if we do ever find a UFO (which I don't believe in btw).......

If it's not powered by a big ol' noisy Pratt & Whitney.....they can just keep the darn thing! :D

One fact that came to light within the last 10-15 years is that the CIA and USAF "promoted" the flying saucer phenomenon in a way as a means of covering up early U-2 flights in the late 50s that had been spotted by commercial pilots.

I would not be particularly surprised if in 20 or 30 years we find that similar UFO 'spottings' were of high tech classified aircraft the US has been flying in the modern era.

i went to the A-12 roadrunner symposium in mobile alabama, a few months ago. they were stationed at area 51, a base steeped in big myth & speculation....... i talked to the pilots that flew out of their with the 55th strategic recon wing & they said the ufo thing was a bunch of b.s,...... i'm doing an article on brigadier general robert holbury, the 1st commander of the group, & his subordinates said the ufo thing was b.s. as well. i'm sure wix member owen miller has his 2 cents to add as he helped coordinate the event......... owen??? the floor is yours.

As much as it would be fun, a good dose of the show X-files wouldn't do anything to clarify things. That show beautifully danced around the subject of UFO's.

I too believe that the idea of UFO's (of alien design) have been used to cover up the development of real high-tech aircraft of the US gov't. It is smart to play on peoples' imaginations and in such a way that if anyone were to actually see one of the top secret airplanes, that they could easily be discounted as nut job or wacko (not Waco). It's very clever.

Planes like the SR-71 can explain some sightings, but as Bill mentions there are many sightings that can't be explained by Blackbird, weather balloon, Avrocar, or anything else that we are now aware of.

I'd like to think that extra-terrestrials exist and have visited us. Jury's still way out though. It would seem odd to me that we are the only life in the universe... so I just assume there must be more out there. And clearly they are proving to be smarter than us, considering they've avoided open contact with us so far. All they do is pick on the poor folk and then prod them with things.

Anyways, that's getting off topic.

I think that a lot of sightings can be explained by peoples' over-sensitive imaginations.

One example of my imagination in action is from the other day when I was driving down the highway and saw a mound of something on the edge of the pavement. At first glance I would swear it looked like a dog or coyote that had been hit by traffic, but as I got closer I could see it was just a mangled up piece of carpet or something. Not an animal.

My point is that I think that when people see something that they don't understand right away, they create an image in their minds of what it could be. For me, it was road-kill, and had my initial glance been all that I saw, I would still be believing it.

For someone spotting a strange craft for just a moment, their first reaction might be that they saw a UFO, because they couldn't easily explain what they saw otherwise.

To be honest, I'm skeptical of both sides of the argument. Both sides have their fair share of whack jobs and liars. I'm not pointing any fingers, but as the X-files says: "Trust no one" and "The truth is out there."

I was forced to lock few topic on my forum in Serbia due to many uncofirmed statement. UFO- yes they are tested in Soviet Union and I have image of some of them. Also there is know test in USA. Soviet have report couple years ago downing one Su-27 by UFO. One of my friend who was on radar control have told me what he had seen on screen to happen over Yugoslavia and Hungary.

There is still nothing strange in all of this event. First observed in USA was fast some 2000 km/h and almost teh same as vitness report the speed of one flying disc over Germany in May 1945. So great option that this could be also similar machine tested in USA.

Only posible out teresstial contact was described in Bible by prophet Ezekiel.... sorry I don't know correct writing in English. NASA has also analyzed this and give some reconstruction of the flying obect. No need to tell that in many old manuscript or legends are state some kind of high technology.

This is a great subject. It always cracks me up when people claim strange lights in the sky. It seems to me if we do have visitors from another planet come here, they aren't going to come in all lit up. If they have the technology to get here then they can certainly come in dark. Plus, they could probably make our stealth technology look like a Model T compared to theirs.

UFO means unidentified flying object. It doesn't mean spaceships and visitors from another planet.

Most strange things in the sky are something that is quite ordinary.
I saw this saucer shaped object.

But later figured out it was a garbage bag...

This "stealth pillow" did not have little guys on it.
Nor was it environmentally friendly...(Not Green/eco... they should have chosen paper!)
Most of this stuff will be figured out in a few years.
If you had seen this 20 years ago... what would you have thought?

As daveymac82c said "lot of sightings can be explained by peoples' over-sensitive imaginations."

John Frost of Avro Canada. In... Canada, and the USA, not Britain.

Nothing to do with Avro in the UK, although Frost had worked there on conventional aircraft before.

JDK, I am corrected, AVRO was in Canada not UK as I assumed.

And Les, thanks for pointing out that UFO does NOT mean alien spaceship, it just means something UNIDENTIFIED, that flys, or appears to.

And Thomas, of all the many UFO sightings and descriptions, none that I am aware of refer to any of them dripping oil, so whatever propulsion system they use, I don't think it is a radial engine.

Or, maybe it's for the same reason we stopped putting camoflage on B-17's and Mustangs toward the end of WW2. We left them nice and shiney with colorful tails that could be seen miles away?

Thinking... "We have Air Superiority...and we really don't care whether you see us coming or not!"
