It looks like a compromise has been reached to save Hangar One at Moffett Field,Ca. The Navy will strip off the outer panels which contain toxins like asbestos leaving the steel skeleton in place. It will then be up to a fundraising campaign to raise funds to reskin the hangar. see www.moffettfieldmuseum.org

Thanks for the update, Pat. A partial save is still better than what is going on in Kansas right now. Two WWII B-29 hangars are already gone at Great Bend, and one is soon to be destroyed at Pratt along with the Sub-Depot Machine Shop. It wasn't for lack of trying to save them, but you can't defeat liability concerns with historical preservation arguments anymore.

What's the problem with leaving the hangar alone - "as is"? Are the panels hurting anything? Hangar 1 at Lakehurst is covered with asbestos panels and nobody is talking about removing those...

Yep, me too.

I feel bad about what is going on at the old 2AF bases in Kansas, but it's partly my own fault. I had been somewhat involved in the preservation of airfield structures up there, but have been sidetracked for a while now. I realize you can't save everything, but I still feel like it's partly my failure to "beat the drum" in defence of saving the historical structures that led to all this destruction.

Once they're gone, they're gone forever. Not unlike the folks who worked so hard to build them, trained in them, and worked in them to help win the War.

Ask Wendover Tom about the hanger in Wendover. When I first started racing there in the mid 80's, we could go thru the hanger. Now it's off limits because of the "hazardous" materials. They are in the process of cleaning it up.

A couple of shots of Hangar 1 at Lakehurst. It once housed the Hindenburgh (twice), the Los Angeles (she was dismantled in it), the Shenandoah (she was built in it) and others...

Hindenburgh crash site monument is in the foreground of the above photo...

P: Noise coming from under instrument panel. Sounds like a midget pounding on something with a hammer.

S: Took hammer away from midget.
