For several years after we moved to Grapevine, my wife and I passed this curve enroute to the Carswell AFB back gate, heading to the PX and Commissary. As we passed this overlook, just outside the base, and saw such a clear view of the Carswell AFB flight line, we often discussed what a view this must have been for Soviet intellegence during the Cold War. This is where the B-36's, B-58's, B52's and others routinely operated.

Also, along the east side of the street, across from the now barricaded street's shoulder are several large houses. I often wondered how many were occupied by foreign intellengence because the view of the flightline from their upper floors appeared to much better from the now blocked overlook.

Yeah the whole things just stinks...

I have been hanging out there since 1980 or so. There has always been people there....and it is still open, you just have to walk there. So it's not really a security issue as much as it seems to be a city attorney issue...

This subject has been discussed on Fence Check since it happened.

We used to sit at the little park on the hill east of Carswell to watch the goings-on. The park was getting quite run down when we lived down there in the late '90s, but I could imagine taking a picnic basket up there during the SAC heyday and watching operations.

What a shame....I used to live in White Settlement back in late 70's, early 80's....Anybody remember...Whats red white and blue, and eats grass? I remember a few tactical take-offs of the B-52s....that would always shake you out of bed...as well as the F-16's when hitting full afterburners on T.O.
When I moved out of there, the B-36 was just being set up for the outside museum on the west side....My son and I walked down there many a time, and got to crawl all through the big bird.
